John F. Shay, Jr. is a partner in the law firm of Brennan McKenna Mitchell & Shay, Chartered, with offices in Greenbelt, Maryland. His practice is principally focused in the areas of municipal law, civil litigation focused in the area of personal injury, and pre-paid legal services.
Mr. Shay has practiced in the suburban Maryland area for over 30 years, and has been involved in many complex jury trials, winning very favorable results on behalf of his clients. In the personal injury area, Mr. Shay has won verdicts and settled claims totaling well into the seven figures.
On the municipal side, Mr. Shay is a trusted advisor to many local municipalities, which include the City of Greenbelt, the City of Laurel, the City of New Carrollton, and the towns of Berwyn Heights and North Beach. In this area, Mr. Shay has done everything from advising Mayors and Town Councils to participating in litigation on behalf of these municipalities.
Mr. Shay is a member of the Maryland, District of Columbia, and U.S. District Court Bars, the U.S. Court of Appeals 4th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Shay is also an active member of the Maryland Municipal Attorney Association (President, 2006), the Prince George’s County, Calvert County, and Maryland State Bar Associations, and the Southern Maryland Inns of Court.
Mr. Shay graduated cum laude from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and received his law degree from the University of Dayton School of Law in Dayton, Ohio. Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Shay served as an Associate County Attorney for Prince George’s County, Maryland for two years before joining the law firm of Knight, Manzi, Nussbaum & LaPlaca as an associate. Mr. Shay became a principal in that firm in 1989 and continued practicing there until August 2011 when he joined Brennan McKenna Mitchell & Shay, Chartered.
